The BDO Pirates may have dropped a
game this season but the ball hockey side are nowhere near starting a losing
streak. If anything after last week’s 8-1 beat-down of the Lone Star barracudas
the squad seems to be eyeing another winning stretch.
Interestingly last Thursday’s
contest at the Logic arena of Kings Sports Centre started out as a closely
contested game. Even though the Barracudas only had one spare on the bench,
they managed to get on the board first with a goal by Rob Seward about 10
minutes into the game. As it turned out, that would be the lone goal scored by
Lone Star on the night.
BDO, in a bit of disarray after
shuffling their lines, settled down and tied the game a short time after. The
Pirates were able to build on their opening goal with two more to make the
score 3-1 by the end of the first period. BDO came out with guns smoking in the
second period and scored five more times.
Darren Pott ended up with a
hat-trick for the Pirates. Jason Perras also scored two with Scott Somerville,
Jan-Michael Maw and Dave Merrick each scoring one goal each. Defenders Jason
Windsor and Douge Steele deserve special mention for their defensive fortitude
along with goalie Randy Cannon.
In the second match-up the Deloitte
Devil Rays continued their winning ways with a 5-3 victory over the Sharks. It
is the Devil Rays’ second straight narrow win. The Sharks opened the scoring
early on a goal by Marty Temmemagi but the Devil Rays came right back on a
wrap-around goal by Leo Kassam. The Sharks then jumped out to an early 3-1 lead
on goals by Scott Gossen and Temmemagi.
Late in the first half the Rays
exploded with three goals in less than two minutes. Kassam and Brent Forsyth
found the back of the net and captain Rob Rintoul scored on a tip-in of a Ryan
McGuire blast from the point. Rintoul added another in the second half to
extend the lead to 5-3. For the second week in a row, rookie goalie Serge
Berube was under heavy fire but closed the door to keep the lead.
