The Deloitte Devil Rays were one of big surprises last season in local ball hockey. In 2011 the side are out to show their winning ways were not a fluke.
Deloitte opened their campaign in season 12 of the Cayman Islands Ball Hockey League with a win. Deloitte took down the CIBC Islanders 6-4 at the Logic arena of Kings Sports Centre last Thursday. The loss is a tough pill to swallow for CIBC, who were coming off an impressive win in their debut earlier this month against the Lone Star Barracudas.
The Devil Rays poured the pressure on in the first half and were rewarded with a 3-1 lead at halftime. Last season’s top scorers Leo Kassam and Mike Hall scored the first half goals for the club along with Rob Rintoul.
The second half featured scoring at both ends, starting with an Islanders goal from relentless skater Mark Missal in the first 10 seconds of the half. Deloitte kept trying to pull away and Rintoul scored again for the two-goal lead but the Islanders were quick to respond. Mike Hall scored on a rebound after Brent Forsyth hit the goal post for another two goal lead with six minutes to play but Missal was again able to bring the Islanders within one.
Goalie Serge Berube, who had his first season in net last year, made some clutch saves in the last minute as the Islanders pulled the goalie and pressed for a tying goal. After missing out on scoring chances throughout the game, rookie forward Russell Gleisner added an empty net goal as time ran out.
Aside from the Deloitte-CIBC contest, the other match last week saw the Sharks demolish the Barracudas 8-0. Lone Star are now 0-2 in the league while the Sharks are 2-0 under the leadership of captain Scott Gossen.
