Boat chase nets massive ganja find

Police patrolling Cayman waters late Thursday recovered a number of ganja packages after a high speed boat chase.

At around 9:50pm Thursday, the joint Police, Customs and Immigration Marine Unit on proactive patrols became suspicious of a
vessel and when police approached it, the craft sped away.

Marine Unit officers noted during the chase that the suspect vessel had begun to dump
numerous packages into the water. The vessel
proceeded into international waters toward Jamaica and escaped. The Marine Unit vessel and a helicopter tried to find the craft with no success. .

Several large packages thrown from the vessel were subsequently recovered from
the water by the Marine Unit and found to contain a significant quantity of
ganja.

Throughout the overnight period, Marine Unit vessels remained on the
scene recovering packages until daylight when
further searches were conducted by the helicopter and marine vessels. A comprehensive
and exhaustive search of all maritime areas failed to reveal any further
packages.

So far, police said just more than 540 pounds of marijuana has been
recovered.
