Murder charges in East End slaying

An 18-year-old has been charged with murder in connection with last month’s killing of Asher McGaw in East End.

The suspect, identified in court as Chakane Jameile Scott, was arrested during a police operation in East End on 4 October and was expected to appear in court on the murder charge as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition charges.

Mr. McGaw’s body was found on John McLean Drive on 22 September in East End by Royal Cayman Islands Police officers after he had apparently been shot several times.

His killing was one of five to occur within a nine-day span last month on Grand Cayman. No other arrests have been reported that directly connect any homicide suspects to the deaths of the other four men.

In Summary Court Tuesday, Scott’s case was transmitted to the Grand Court after a defence request for bail was made. The Crown opposed that request.

The next court date for the case is Friday, 14 October.

This story was updated from a previous version to include the suspect’s name and details regarding the transmission of the case to the Grand Court.
