Learning one seed at a time

Students at First Baptist Christian School completed a Disney Environmental Project teaching them about native plants and how recycling in the Cayman Islands may reduce the amount of rubbish going to the landfill.

Suzette Hislop from the National Trust came into the class to talk to us about important trees in Grand Cayman. We then decided to plant some Mahogany and Silver Thatch Palm seeds. We have just replanted one of the trees in East End and we are looking forward to watching the others grow and planting them throughout the Island.

As the seeds begin to grow, we hope our ideas for recycling grow, too.

Each class at First Baptist Christian School has a box with items such as margarine containers, egg cartons, cereal boxes and newspapers that the students have collected. These items are already being reused for science and art.

We would like to challenge the Cayman Islands to recycle, too. Every home could have a box with reusable items. Recycling and reusing will protect our beautiful island and our native trees.
