Saxon Motor & General Insurance Company Ltd. began its public school drivers education programme with co-sponsors dms Organisation Ltd., Prestige Motors, Avis, the Cayman Islands Ministry of Education, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service and the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing.
Since October, when the first phase of the programme began, more than 370 students from John Gray and Clifton Hunter high schools have participated in the theoretical course.
On 20 January, the second phase of this course launched at the Family Life Centre with 30 students from Clifton Hunter in attendance. Each student was given three minutes of instructor directed drive time for evaluation based on basic awareness and comfort behind the wheel. Of the 370 students, 150 will qualify to move on to the 5-week course, which would take place within two months. Criteria will be based on their age, behaviour during evaluation, and how well they exhibited responsible driver attitudes.
Senior Inspector Roy Bush and Burmon Scott from the Department of Vehicle and Driver’s Licensing conducted the course.
The Minister of Education Rolston Anglin shared words of encouragement to the students stressing the importance of being a responsible driver. Mr. Anglin said he was pleased to see such a programme had been integrated into the public school curriculum and expressed the desire to see the programme grow and be extended to other students throughout Grand Cayman and its Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.
Brian Williams, chief executive officer of insurance company SaxonMG, said, “By offering this programme to the 16-year-old students, these young drivers will be able to apply the principals learned from this programme to be better drivers tomorrow.”
