Healthy option to be a Winner

For those who have the energy in an already full itinerary, there is another race and walk this weekend for weekend warriors, the Healthy Body Healthy Mind 5K Walk Run.

The No. 1 Shoe Shop and Winners Circle Sports in collaboration with the Cayman Islands Department of Sports and Earth Day presents the second annual Healthy Body Healthy Mind 5K Walk Run on Saturday morning. Walkers start at 6.30am and runners go from 7am.

Last year’s male winner was Derek Larner, while Emily Davies won the women’s race.

Leslie Ann Daley is expected to run and she has been the top female in most of the 5K runs this season.

Avid runner Evelin Ritch is looking forward to participating this year for the first time.

Cayman Islands Deputy Governor Franz Manderson will be running and also encourages all civil servants to participate.

Fastest male civil servant last year Marco Miranda, the deputy chief financial officer for the Ministry of Education, Financial Services and Employment will be running again this year hoping to defend his crown.

Fastest female civil servant last year was Cherry Whittaker, the personal assistance to Deputy Premier Rolston Anglin, is looking forward to participating again.

Organiser Merta Day said: “We invite the entire family to come out to participate. The first 200 registrants get a free T-shirt and refreshments will be available to all participants. There are medals and gift certificates for the first in six categories male and female and medals for the first three places in the six categories.”

There is also a gift certificate for fastest male and female civil servant and great random prizes for walkers and runners.

All proceeds will benefit the National Trust for the Cayman Islands and Hy Tech Track and Field Club.

Winners Circle Sports owner Christopher Goddard said: “The Goddard family is pleased to be able to host an event which gives back to our community. “We are optimistic by the enthusiasm and growth of this event which continues to grow from strength to strength. This year, ASICS has come on board which is great!”

Registration forms can be collected and handed in at The No. 1 Shoe Shop or Winners Circle Sports during normal business hours. Race packs collection is on Friday from 1.30 to 5.30pm

The cost to enter is $25 for adults and $10 for full-time students under age 18 who are attending a high school or primary school.
