A student at Red Bay Primary School who was subjected to what police referred to as alleged excessive discipline is receiving counselling and is still attending classes.
The Ministry of Education said this week that a school counsellor also met with the student’s entire class and that a qualified replacement has been chosen to fill in for the teacher involved in the incident.
The Ministry also said parents of children who were in the student’s class were told about the situation after the Education Department suspended the teacher on Monday.
Specific details of what happened to the student have not been released by either education officials or police. The Ministry of Education said earlier this week that the teacher was suspended due to handling of disciplinary issues.
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Department Family Support Unit is investigating the incident, but no arrests have been made.
The teacher involved will remain on suspension with half pay until that investigation is complete.
Red Bay staff members were also given training at their regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday in dealing with classroom management and conflicts.
