West Bayers turned out in force on Wednesday for the annual ‘Old Time New Year’ family fun day hosted by government minister and West Bay South MLA Tara Rivers at the Ed Bush Stadium.
Webster United Memorial Church celebrated New Year’s Day with its traditional garden party on Manse Road in Bodden Town. Gauging from the large crowd, it was evident that the event, which offers a chance to relax, enjoy good food and meet up with friends, keeps growing each year.
At 12:45 a.m. on New Year’s Day, Dylan Corbin Etherington came into the world, the first child for parents Daniel and Jade, and the first baby born in the Cayman Islands in 2017. “The pregnancy was hard. The labor was hard, but it was definitely worth it.”
A 49-year-old man from West Bay died in hospital Monday morning after being struck on the head by a boat from which he had been thrown overboard while he and another man were testing the vessel on New Year’s Day.
Webster United Memorial Church will celebrate New Year’s Day with its traditional annual garden party at Manse Road in Bodden Town. The public is invited to the free outdoor party, which offers the opportunity throughout the day to enjoy fellowship with family and friends.
Another public holiday – Election Day – has been declared for the Cayman Islands in 2017. Governor Helen Kilpatrick has approved the Elections Office’s schedule for the general election on May 24, 2017.
Next year’s public holidays begin with a long weekend for the new year, with Jan. 2 designated as a holiday, as Jan. 1 falls on a Sunday.
