Theft from elderly case in court

Michelle Bouchard appeared in Summary Court on Tuesday morning, when Defence Attorney Ben Tonner raised the question of where her theft charges would be tried.

A press release from police last week indicated that eight charges of theft related to a total of US$2.1 million.

The release described the defendant as a Canadian national, 52, here on a student visa. The victim was described as an elderly male resident on the Island.

Mr. Tonner said all the charges against his client were Category B, meaning they could be dealt with in Summary Court or Grand Court.

Magistrate Valdis Foldats asked about another charge of transfer of criminal property, pointing out that it would be Grand Court only, if the charge were brought by indictment.

He suggested that Mr. Tonner discuss the matter with Crown Counsel Michael Snape before the matter comes back to court.
