Police arrest 37, most for unpaid traffic tickets

More than three dozen people who did not show up in court or forgot to pay their traffic tickets got a reminder last week, and a trip downtown in a police car. Police said they arrested 37 people last week on outstanding warrants, according to a press release sent out Friday.

A man was beaten by five attackers at the Coral Isle Bar on Cayman Brac around 8:30 p.m. on Monday, police reported. Police say five men entered the bar and attacked the victim. “The man was seriously beaten but no police or emergency services were called, and the man did not attend the hospital."

A 24-year-old male was arrested Friday on suspicion of murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Justin Manderson, who was killed Oct. 1 outside club Nectar, but has not been charged for his death.

Lawmakers lessen police court burden

A bill approved by Cayman Islands lawmakers on Friday will allow government workers other than police officers to serve court witness summons. According to Attorney General Samuel Bulgin, changes made to the criminal procedure code identify court bailiffs and other court personnel to serve witness summonses.

Ganja boat captain jailed for 42 months

A boat captain who imported 546 pounds of ganja was jailed Tuesday for three-and-a-half years. The weight of ganja being imported and the role played by defendant Ricky William Manderson were the main factors affecting his sentence, Magistrate Valdis Foldats said.
