An individual has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty in relation to the dog that was brought to the Cayman Islands Humane Society in August with burns from his head to the middle of his back.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is now considering the cases of two dogs injured in separate burning incidents. The Department of Agriculture recently wrapped up its investigation into the injured animal Rufus, a dog brought to the Cayman Islands Humane Society on Aug. 8. No arrests were made as a result of the investigation.
Burned dog may have been victim of animal neglect
Rufus, the dog brought to Island Veterinary Services with extensive burn wounds last week, may have been suffering longer than initially reported. Dr. Ioanna Popescu, who treated Rufus, said Tuesday that she believes the animal’s owner waited at least a week before bringing him in for care.

Another dog – the second in three months – has been brought to the Cayman Islands Humane Society with an extensive burn injury. The most recently injured dog, Rufus, was brought in last Tuesday and immediately sent to Island Veterinary Services for treatment.

Beach training for dogs marks 10th anniversary
For a decade, volunteers have been matched with dogs to spend about an hour teaching their canine partners to sit, heel, walk on a leash and other skills. In between the short training sessions, volunteers take the dogs for a swim or a walk on the beach.
